UPDATE: The sheriff’s bomb squad determined the object was a home-made tool kit. The scene was cleared shortly after 5:30 p.m.
The Sheriff’s Department has been called to check a suspicious device found near the Transit Center in Escondido. We will have more in our newscast at 6 p.m.
A team from Sea World is on its way help a whale that is injured off the coast of Point Loma, according to the Coast Guard. The 30 foot gray wale is trapped in lobster lines. Boaters are being advised to say away from the whale.
San Diego police officers are searching for a bank robber who left the scene on a scooter. The man used a gun to rob a Bank of America on Black Mountain Road, a police spokeswoman said. They don’t have a description of him.
UPDATE: Crews were able to rescue the worker. His condition us unknown.
The SDFD is responding to an accident at a construction site in Pacific Beach. Initial reports indicate a construction worker somehow fell down a hole that is at least 25 feet deep, according to the SDFD. We have crews and Sky10 on the way.

Two people, including a juvenile, are in jail this morning after leading the CHP on a chase, according to the CHP. That pursuit ended when the suspects’ car collided with a CHP cruiser. The chase started at about 3:00 a.m. on I-15 near Old Highway 395 and ended on Palm Avenue in Vista.
One day after learning that she could be out of a Michigan prison in a matter of months Susan Lefevre speaks to 10News. Lefevre says her experience has been very painful and she’s looking forward to being released. Last year, three decades after she escaped from a Michigan prison while serving a sentence for drug crimes, the Carmel Valley mother was sent back to prison. 10News at 5:00 will have much more on what Lefevre has to say about her second time behind bars.

The Chula Vista Police Department received a referral from San Diego County Child Welfare Services with information that a 15 year old male had disclosed that his godmother, Carmina Lopez, had forced him to have sex with her beginning at age 11. The molestation started in 2004 and continued through June of 2008.
We’ll have the latest on the allegations with a live report on 10News at 5:00. Then at 5:30 we’ll take a closer look at these cases with a psychologist who is helping local schools deal with teacher - student sexual relationships
UPDATE: The South Bay Unified School District says Lopez, who has been with the district since 2004, will be on leave until the case if resolved and that they are cooperating with the police investigation.
A South Bay elementary school teacher being held $2,620,500 bail after being arrested on 87 charges ranging from child cruelty to having sex with a minor. Lopez teaches at Sunnyslope Elementary School, police allege she had an ongoing sexual relationship with one of her male students that started when he was 11-years-old. Chula Vista police arrested Carmen Lopez at her home last night, a department spokesman said.

A fire has broken out in the San Diego River bed in Lakeside this afternoon. The fire is burning near Highway 67 and Willow Road. No structures are threatened. Firefighters say they heard several explosions when they arrived at the scene.
The number of rapes reported to the San Diego Police Department is up 27% compared to last year, the city announced today. 376 rapes were reported last year compared to 296 in 2007. Overall crime in the city is down, including a 4.5% decrease in violent crime. Vehicle theft is down nearly 20%. Here is the full report. Recently other police departments in the county have also announced decreases in crime in 2008.
